I know that you can only play one person at a time during multiplayer with other people at your home, but I wanted to know if you can play against your xbox live friends?

id probably say no. but then you could be surprised
go into a game shop which has the game and see if it says the online thingy there or ask someone in the store. 
No. You can compare scores with friends with XBL Gold, but you cannot actually battle them. I believe the Konami dance game called Dance Masters has online multi-player with up to four people, but if you’re not big into J-pop you probably wouldn’t have much interest in playing it.
